Sandy Hook Promise

Radio Script

Concept: We hear a conversation between a mother and a son. The mother’s voice is near the mic but the son’s is a little farther away, like we’re “seeing” (hearing) this from the point of view of the mother. For the mother, I think of someone with little emotion in their voice. The son is about 10-13 years old, not too mature.

DOOR OPENS AND CLOSES.

Son:

Hey, mom. I’m back.

Mom:

Oh, he- (SON INTERRUPTS)

Son:

(TALKING KIND OF FAST) What’s for dinner? That kid from school was being weird again. (SFX: SOUNDS OF THE SON GOING UP THE STAIRS, CONTINUES TALKING WHILE GOING UP, VOICE GETS FARTHER AWAY) Anyway, I’ll be in my room if you need me.

Mom:

(DISTRACTED) Okay, dear.

DOOR OPENS AND CLOSES.

Son:

Hey, mom. I’m back. I tried talking to that kid again and he just kinda laughed and said, “oh, I’ll miss you”. What a weirdo.

Mom:

(DISTRACTED) Hmm, weird.

Son:

(SPEECH OVERLAPS A LITTLE WITH MOM TO INDICATE NEITHER ARE REALLY LISTENING TO EACH OTHER) Anyway, I’ve got a ton of homework, so I’ll see you at dinner.

Mom:

Okay, dear.

DOOR OPENS AND CLOSES.

Son:

Hey mom, I’m back. Gosh, today was a lot. That kid I was telling you about?

Mom:

(DISTRACTED) Mm-hmm?

Son:

Well, he got a knife to school, can you believe it? He got detention though so that serves him right.

Mom:

Well, that’s good.

Son:

Anyway, I’m about to go to a friend’s house, see you tonight.

Mom:

Okay, dear.

VO:

Warnings are everywhere.

WE HEAR A NEWS REPORTER TALKING. THE SOUND IS A LITTLE STATIC-Y SINCE IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE COMING FROM A TV.

Reporter:

There is a report of a shooting at Redwood High School… (FADES OUT)

VO:

Pay attention, learn the signs, and prevent school shootings. Sandy Hook Promise dot org.
